Why Mook?
Growing up in my house, we never watched Disney channel, or Nickelodeon. My mom wasn’t raised with a TV in the house, but my dad? He likes Mafia movies. And if you ever watch many mafia movies you know a common insult they used was Mook. At some point Dad started calling me that and it’s become kind of a family nickname for me. Not that it was ever meant as an insult, and I never took it that way.
Family started calling me Mook, coworkers at the family restaurant called me Mook during the 8 years I worked there; and people always got a kick that I named my car the Mook-Mobile.
Today, there is something that really stands out to me about taking something some may view as negative and changing it into something pure that brings people together. I think that mindset is a big part of what motivated me to become a personal trainer and to start this group.
My big negative? I used to be a porn addict. Not pornhub, that never did much for me. My addiction was to onlyfans and camgirls.
“Heroes use their pain, Villains let their pain use them”. I can’t find where this quote comes from, google is telling me Alex Hormozi, but that’s paraphrasing.
During that time, I experienced what keeping secrets and purposefully engaging in something you are ashamed of can do to a man. I had never been more isolated and stressed, and never felt so guilty.
That changed when I learned some very valuable lessons
I learned I have potential to be someone greater than what I was. I learned I deserved better than to feel that lonely and depressed. And I learned to be assertive, especially when it came to putting myself first.
It is so easy in today’s world to give in to something like explicit content, and also easy to give in to bullying, videogames, drugs, alcohol, vaping, smoking, and doomscrolling on social media.
These things can be stress relieving and give you a sense of power, but in reality, they control you. Breaking free from it was the best thing I ever did. Not just because of how it affected my life, but because of how I get to affect the lives of those around me now.
I take a look at men today, and in them I see the same thing I’ve seen in myself: untapped potential. Here is how we make men believe in themselves again.
